Spanish renewable energy premiums rise 24% Y/Y in 2012

Feb 12, 2013 - Spanish premiums for renewable energy output rose by 24% year-on-year in 2012 to EUR 7.888 billion (USD 10.6bn), data by energy market regulator CNE showed.

The amount of renewable energy sold last year stood at 102,511 GWh, up 11%, while installed capacity rose by 2,386 MW to 38,066 MW, CNE said.

The largest amount of premiums, worth EUR 2.589 billion was received by the photovoltaic plants, followed by wind energy with EUR 1.777 billion and the co-generation facilities with EUR 1.603 billion.

In December alone, the premiums to the renewable energy sector amounted to EUR 575.2 million.

The renewable energy covered 32% of the electricity demand in Spain in 2012, with the stake of wind energy hitting 18%, according to data by Spanish electricity grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (MCE:REE), or REE.
