Queensland Hydro picks contractors for 2-GW pumped storage project
Sep 18, 2024 6:05 CESTSri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has cleared a proposal to build a huge hybrid renewable energy complex in the Pooneryn area, comprising an 800-MW solar power plant and a 240-MW wind farm.
The proposal made by Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was approved at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. It is in line with the government’s plan to add a considerable amount of renewable energy to the National Energy Network, the announcement says. The project will be realised in three stages.
Studies made by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) have revealed that Pooneryn, which is situated in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, is a suitable area for generating electricity from wind and solar parks.
Earlier this year, local media reported that Sri Lanka was also preparing to hold a tender for a 100-MW floating photovoltaic (PV) project in the Maduru Oya reservoir.
