The government of Sri Lanka will launch a tender for the construction of two floating solar photovoltaic (PV) parks totalling 200 MW at an existing reservoir used for hydropower generation.

An invitation for expression of interest (EoI) was recently launched by government-owned Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), with proposals to be accepted by December 13.

The floating solar parks are intended to be installed on the surface of Samanalawewa Reservoir, located 160 km south of Colombo. Each plant will have a capacity of 100 MW and will be built to leverage the reservoir’s existing capacity and complement the hydropower station’s operations.

Interested bidders will be chosen based on their pricing offers, with each candidate allowed to submit only a single proposal for 100 MW of capacity. The proposals should include details about the power plant as well as grid interconnection, such as transmission lines and substations.

Winners will be awarded 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Under its 2019-2025 renewable energy development programme, Sri Lanka aims to add 1.56 GW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity, of which 1 GW will come from large-scale projects. Some 200 MW is reserved for floating PV capacity.
