UK utility SSE plc (LON:SSE) and EET Hydrogen, part of Essar Energy Transition (EET), have teamed up to develop a green hydrogen production facility with a capacity of 40 MWe in the North West of England, the companies announced on Tuesday.

The project, called Gowy Green Hydrogen, is located at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. Development work is underway, with feasibility studies completed and design and site investigation works ongoing. The facility could be online as early as 2028. It will supply hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the region.

A planning application is expected to be submitted in 2025.

“Gowy Green is a fantastic addition to our existing portfolio of low carbon hydrogen projects, supporting our mission to be the leading low-carbon hydrogen business in the UK," said Jess Ledger, green hydrogen lead at EET Hydrogen.

Hannah Bronwin, director of business development for SSE Thermal, said that scaling up green hydrogen will be key to decarbonising hard-to-abate industries and that Gowy Green Hydrogen can help secure much needed hydrogen production capacity in a region already playing a leading role in the energy transition.
