SSE Plc (LON:SSE) and Norway’s Equinor (OSE:EQNR) are preparing to run a consultation on plans for a 900-MW hydrogen-fired power station in North Lincolnshire, England, which could be operational from 2030.

The proposed Keadby Hydrogen Power Station will enter environmental scoping in April before the partners launch a public consultation, SSE said on Friday. A full planning application will then be made in due course.

The ambition is to run the new power station on 100% hydrogen from the beginning, but the planning application would be ‘dual fuel’ in nature in recognition of the challenges in developing the necessary hydrogen supplies.

SSE noted that the UK government's consultation on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements has outlined the need for new flexible power stations from the start of the 2030s.

SSE’s Keadby site was formerly a coal-fired power station. It now hosts the Keadby 2 gas-fired power stations and an onshore wind farm. SSE and Equinor are also developing Keadby Carbon Capture Power Station.
