SSEN reserves suppliers' capacity for Scottish subsea links

The transmission business of UK energy group SSE Plc (LON:SSE) has signed capacity reservation agreements for the production and installation of the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable and converter stations for two subsea links in Scotland.

The agreements, announced today, are with Danish power cable manufacturer NKT A/S (CPH:NKT) and Swiss-based Hitachi Energy and come after SSEN Transmission in July selected the companies for converter systems and cables for the projects, respectively.

The two projects, the 1.8-GW Western Isles and 2-GW Spittal-Peterhead links, are part of The Pathway to 2030 Holistic Network Design (HND), a major upgrade of the power transmission network across Great Britain, supporting the UK and Scottish governments’ renewable energy targets by 2030. The links are scheduled to be energised in 2030.

“Recognising the unprecedented global demand for HVDC technology, we have acted with pace to secure these key components at the earliest opportunity and we now look forward to concluding contractual arrangements and building on our long-established and strong working relationship with Hitachi Energy and NKT,” said Sandy Mactaggart, Director of Offshore Delivery for SSEN Transmission.
