The photovoltaic (PV) cell production line of a new 3-GW smart factory in Thailand should commence operation by July, the company behind the project, namely Standard Energy, announced on Friday.

The firm has been building the USD-100-million-plus (EUR 92.3m) facility at the LK Rayong Industrial City Hub since last year with the intention of adding production capacity for 3 GW of silicon wafers and 3 GW of PV cells.

Standard Energy said that the project has reached the stage where equipment is being installed. Following the launch of the PV cell line, work will continue so that the N-type silicon wafer production line goes live as well by September.

According to the company, this will be the country’s third-largest smart factory and will create more than 1,000 local jobs.
