Brooklyn, New York-based energy storage developer NineDot Energy has secured US coffee retailer Starbucks Corp (NASDAQ:SBUX) as an anchor battery storage subscriber.

The coffeehouse chain has signed an energy credit subscription agreement with NineDot, which has one operational and 30 under-construction facilities across New York City, NineDot said on Thursday.

NineDot is focused on developing community-scale urban energy solutions, mainly battery storage, in the New York City metropolitan area. The firm, which is backed by private equity investor Carlyle Group Inc, has a 3-MW/12-MWh battery in operation in Northeast Bronx, that is equipped with Tesla Megapack units and is storing electricity from a nearby solar plant. All of the company's assets will be run under a state programme for Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) that gives battery sites credits for supporting the needs of utilites during high-demand periods.

“NineDot has a strong pipeline of battery energy storage projects that can support Starbucks throughout the New York City area,” said David Arfin, NineDot Energy’s CEO and co-founder.

NineDot is aiming to build a portfolio of battery energy storage systems exceeding 400 MW by the end of 2026.
