Swedish steelmaker SSAB’s (STO:SSAB-A) operations in Italy have gone 100% fossil-free thanks to a rooftop solar installation covering the entire energy consumption of the SSAB Ghedi Steel Service Center in the town of Ghedi.

The recently installed solar panels will generate an estimated 830 MWh annually. Half of the output will be used for the production activities at the SSAB Ghedi Steel Service Center, its office building, and for electric vehicle (EV) charging, while the rest will be fed into the local grid.

The 756-kWp solar project was implemented by Solnet Group for Italy-based SSAB Swedish Steel SpA.

The Italian initiative is aligned with SSAB’s goal to be the first to offer fossil-free steel to the market at a commercial scale in 2026. The company targets zero carbon dioxide emissions from its own operations in around 2030.
