Indian EPC contractor Sterling and Wilson has launched the construction of a 54-MW solar park in Zambia's southeastern province of Lusaka, the Lusaka Times said today, citing a company official.

The photovoltaic (PV) facility will be situated on a 52-ha (12-acre) site in the town of Kafue and is expected to be completed within eight months, said Atul Goyal, head of human resource north region at Sterling and Wilson. The project will require an investment of USD 60 million (EUR 50.9m).

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm will build the solar plant in line with a government strategy for the addition of at least 600 MW of solar capacity throught the country, Goyal told the newspaper. The plan is aimed at lowering the power deficit in Zambia.

At the start of June, 12 bidders were pre-qualified in Zambia’s procurement round for up to 300 MW of utility-scale solar power capacity under an initiative of the World Bank. The Scaling Solar programme helps governments to quickly contract large-scale solar capacity with private financing.
