Suedzucker Moldova starts building 7.5 mln euro biogas plant - govt

The Moldovan unit of German sugar producer Suedzucker launched on Friday the construction of a 7.5 million euro ($9.8 million) biogas plant, the Moldovan government said.

The plant, to be located in the town of Drochia in northern Romania, will produce biogas from pulp remaining after processing of sugar beet. It will have an installed processing capacity of 55,000 tonnes of pulp per year and production capacity of 7.3 million cubic metres of biogas, the cabinet said in a statement.

The plant is expected to become operational in 2013 with investment to be recovered in the five years. Suedzucker Moldova will use biogas in its sugar production process.

Suedzucker Moldova produced 63,200 tonnes of sugar last year, 71.4% out of total sugar output in Moldova. The company has invested 480 million lei ($39 million/30 million euro) so far.
