Sunergy Inc (OTCMKTS:SNEY), the US miner that sought to develop a 50-MW-plus solar power project in Liberia, has received the blessing of the West African country’s government to start with a small-scale installation there.

The Arizona-based junior mining firm said on Tuesday that it will be turning to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for support to realise the pilot project.

In early August, Sunergy said it had submitted its official Expression of Interest (EoI) to build, finance, operate and own solar projects in the West African country over the next 18 months in a consortium with a US-based independent power producer (IPP). Sunergy said at the time that the total project investment is estimated at roughly USD 100 million (EUR 93.9m).

After several meetings with representatives from Liberia’s government, Sunergy has received the green light to build a small solar array to power the John F Kennedy Hospital in the capital Monrovia, it said yesterday.
