German electrolyser maker Sunfire GmbH has received an order to build a 100-MW electrolyser for energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE), representing the final stage of a major 300-MW green hydrogen project.

The electrolyser will be installed at RWE’s site in Lingen, western Germany, the companies said on Wednesday.

In addition, German engineering group Bilfinger SE (ETR:GBF) has been commissioned to build the auxiliary and ancillary systems.

RWE said the contract for the 100-MW project has a value “in the low hundred-million-euro range”.

Under the agreement, Sunfire will supply RWE with a total of 10 modules of its pressurized alkaline technology, each with a 10-MW capacity.

The electrolyser is expected to become operational by the end of 2027 and will produce up to two tonnes of hydrogen per hour. The green fuel will be used by industrial customers in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.

Overall, RWE aims to build a 300-MW green hydrogen plant, consisting of three electrolysers with a capacity of 100 MW each. The company ordered the first two electrolysis systems from Linde Engineering and ITM Power in 2022.

In July 2024, RWE was granted financing of EUR 619 million (USD 682.9m) from the German government and federal state governments to implement the 300-MW project as well as a hydrogen storage facility in Gronau-Epe, North Rhine-Westphalia.
