Iberdrola inaugurates 496-MW Saint-Brieuc wind farm offshore France
Sep 19, 2024 16:25 CESTChinese solar inverter maker Sungrow Power Supply Co Ltd (SHE:300274) said today it will provide equipment for a 20-MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant with 5 MW/10 MWh of energy storage in Malawi.
The Golomoti project, expected to come online at the end of 2021, will use Sungrow's solar-plus-storage MV solution that includes PV inverter, MV station, power conversion system, battery container and energy management system (EMS).
JCM Power, an independent power producer (IPP) focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and South Asia, is managing the engineering, procurement and construction activities for the project.
"We are pleased to have selected Sungrow to supply solar inverters, transformer kiosks and a one-stop lithium-ion battery energy storage solution for this pioneering project," said JCM Power engineering director Shane Eglinton.
Located in the Dedza district near the town of Golomoti, this is Malawi's first utility-scale solar-plus-storage project. It is expected to improve the availability, reliability and quality of the Malawi power supply and is hoped to demonstrate the benefit of combining solar with energy storage in sub-Saharan Africa.
JCM Power is partnering on the project with InfraCo Africa. The development is supported by RINA and Innovate UK.
