Estonia-based renewable energy developer and producer Sunly and Finnish forest industry group Metsa are getting ready to break ground on a 244-MW solar project in northwestern Estonia in the second quarter.

Sunly, which is backed by French fund Mirova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), said on Thursday the proposed park will be the largest one of its kind in the Baltics. The project will be reaslised as the initial stage of a larger hybrid complex incorporating wind turbines and batteries.

The Risti photovoltaic (PV) park will be made up of almost 350,000 panels with tracking systems, to be installed in the Laane-Nigula municipality of Laane County. It is scheduled to go online in the first half of 2026 and produce electricity for around 55,000 homes annually.

The solar farm will be built at a cost of almost EUR 120 million (USD 131.3m).

“For us, this is the first major example of a hybrid park project where different types of electricity generation and storage are located behind the same connection point,” said Klaus Pilar, Country Manager of Sunly Estonia.
