Finnish manure-based liquified biogas (LBG) firm Suomen Lantakaasu said that it will invest more than EUR 80 million (USD 85.0m) to build a renewable liquefied biogas plant in Kiuruvesi, Finland as part of the larger Upper Savo complex.

The Kiuruvesi plant will utilise cattle farm manure and other agricultural and food industry byproducts. Construction works at the site are set to start this winter, while the commissioning is anticipated in 2026.

Once in operation, the new facility will be capable of liquefying about 125 GWh of biogas per year, which is equivalent to the estimated annual fuel consumption of 250 heavy-duty vehicles. Its output will be distributed through local energy firm St1’s distribution network for use as transportation fuel. Lundsby Renewable Solutions A/S has been selected as the supplier of the biogas plant.

The Upper Savo complex includes the centralised plant in Kiuruvesi as well as three smaller satellite plants in Lapinlahti, Sonkajarvi and Nurmes. The final decisions on the construction of the satellite plants are still pending the completion of the environmental permitting and zoning processes.

The overall Upper Savo project is estimated at about EUR 100 million and is backed by a EUR-19.2-million grant from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.

Suomen Lantakaasu is a joint venture of St1 and local food company Valio. Apart from the Kiuruvesi and the satellite plants, the company is also building a central plant of nearly the same size in Nurmo, while exploring new sites in the Ostrobothnia and North Ostrobothnia region. It is aiming at 1 TWh of output and the already planned projects cover almost half of the targeted volume.
