Swiss-based investment manager SUSI Partners said today it will fund the development of a battery energy storage portfolio in Chile, expanding its partnership with local developer BIWO Renovables.

The portfolio includes 22 battery projects with a targeted overall capacity of 860 MW and up to 3.5 GWh, located in the central-southern part of the country. Most of the projects are in advanced development stages, with the first anticipated to reach ready-to-build status during the first half of 2025.

SUSI Partners has agreed to find the portfolio through its SUSI Energy Transition Fund. It said its existing partner BIWO has managed to secure scarce interconnection capacity in strategic locations. Standalone battery storage systems have emerged as the most cost-efficient and rapid solution to ease transmission grid pressure as renewable energy increases on Chile’s power grid, the company added. This is reflected in the recently updated capacity market regulation, which addresses the need for energy storage, it explained.

SUSI and BIWO’s “prolific” partnership already involves distributed generation projects and utility-scale hybrid solar and battery storage projects.
