Iberdrola inaugurates 496-MW Saint-Brieuc wind farm offshore France
Sep 19, 2024 16:25 CESTFeb 17, 2012 - Swedish offshore floating platforms maker Hexicon AB has proposed to deploy a 54-MW floating offshore wind farm in Malta, national weekly newspaper Malta Today said on Thursday, citing an application by the company.
The project description statement was submitted to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, and is available on its website.
The project comprises a 460-metre (1,509 ft) wind platform that will host 36 wind turbines. The wind farm will connect via a cable to an offshore substation in the village of Maghtab. The facility will produce energy at a lower price than oil-based power stations, according to Hexicon's statement.
Hexicon has applied for project funding under the European Union's investment programme for renewable energy NER300. If the application receives approval, the project could become operational in June 2014, the newspaper said.
The project will be subject to environment impact assessments. Hexicon has to apply for a development permit upon completing the environmental impact studies.
Malta targets to increase the share of renewable energy in its total energy mix to 10% by 2020 from 1%-2% at present.
Hexicon has already formed subsidiaries in Malta and Cyprus, the newspaper added.
