Swinerton starts building 1st of 4 US biogas plants for C2e

US company Swinerton Builders said on Tuesday it has broken ground on the largest utility-scale biogas facility in the US under a partnership with Carbon Cycle Energy (C2e) concerning a total of four such plants.

Swinerton's newly formed Waste to Energy group expects to build the biogas plant on an 82-acre (33.18 ha) site in Warsaw, North Carolina within 16 months. Upon completion, every day the facility will be turning 4,200 tonnes of solid and liquid biodegradable materials into biomethane gas. The plan is to produce 6,500 dekatherms of biomethane per day.

The plant will be processing organic waste feedstock product from between 10 and 20 local farm producers of hogs and chicken waste. At full capacity, it will generate over one billion cu m (35.3 billion cu ft) of pipeline-quality biomethane gas for Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) under a 15-year contract. The energy company will use the gas to produce eleectricity with a yield of about 125,000 MW annually.

Swinerton noted that it has agreements with C2e to build similar plants in Arizona, Arkansas and Missouri in the future.
