T-Mobile pledges to use 100% renewable power for Washington HQ

T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:PCS), part of German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom (ETR:DTE), will source electricity for its Bellevue, Washington, headquarters entirely from renewables by 2021.

The US company said on Tuesday it has joined the so-called Green Direct programme of utility Puget Sound Energy (PSE), which will enable it to use power from local wind and solar power facilities. The move is part of T-Mobile’s efforts to “save millions of dollars” in energy costs and supports its goal of using 100% renewable electricity for all of its operations by 2021.

As part of the programme, T-Mobile will buy renewable electricity from dedicated local wind and solar power plants. The photovoltaic (PV) power will come from the largest solar park in the state of Washington. The firm's participation in the PSE initiative has been approved by the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission.

On announcing its commitment to renewables at the start of the year, T-Mobile agreed to buy 160 MW of the output of its Infinity Renewables’ 474-MW Solomon Forks wind farm in Kansas, planned to go live in early 2019. The mobile operator already buys electricity from Enel Green Power North America Inc’s 300-MW Red Dirt plant in Oklahoma.
