The Rural Energy Agency (REA) in Tanzania has signed a cooperation agreement with the Norwegian Embassy and the Netherlands government to jointly commit over TZS 9 billion (USD 4.1m/ EUR 3.8m) to fund a two-year programme to promote wide use of domestic biogas in rural Tanzania.

The programme, which will cover 2016 and 2017, aims at building 10,000 biogas plants across the country.

The new programme is actually a continuation of a successful initiative launched in 2009 that saw over 12,000 biogas digesters being installed across the country.

Tanzania Domestic Biogas Programme (TDBP), which started operations in 2009, as part of the Africa Biogas Partnership Programme (ABPP) is the vehicle that will execute the new projects as well.

ABPP is a joint venture between the Netherlands Directorate for Development Cooperation (DGIS), the Humanist Institute for Co-operation with Developing Countries (Hivos) and the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV).
