TP Solar Ltd, part of Indian electric utility Tata Power Co Ltd’s (BOM:500400) renewable energy business, has launched the operation of a 2-GW solar cell production line at a recently completed factory in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The unit of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) will gradually ramp up production at the site and launch another 2 GW over the next four-six weeks. Full manufacturing activities at the 4.3-GW integrated cell and module plant are planned to begin in the next few months, Tata Power said.

The photovoltaics (PV) factory in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu is currently India’s largest single-site solar cell and module production base, according to Tata Power. The facility, equipped with TOPCon and Mono Perc technology, earlier this year produced its first solar modules and since the commissioning of the module line last October has rolled out 1.25 GW to date.

The entire output of the INR-43-billion (USD 512.6m/EUR 462.4m) Tirunelveli manufacturing plant will initially be dedicated to Tata Power’s ongoing projects. In the future, the company will seek opportunities to distribute the equipment to the wider market so as to meet the rising demand for locally-made solar products.

Tata Power already runs another PV factory in Karnataka state, which has a production capacity of 682 MW for solar modules and 530 MW for solar cells.
