Tembec launches biogas facility at Quebec mill

Oct 3, 2012 - Canadian pulp and paper company Tembec Inc (TSE:TMB) formally launched an anaerobic treatment facility designed to produce methane from effluent and cut the use of fossil fuels at the firm’s pulp mill in Matane, Quebec.

The project, which was first announced in January 2011, was funded chiefly by the Canadian government which contributed CAD 19.7 million (USD 20m/EUR 16m) and the Government of Quebec with CAD 6.3 million. The total investment in the plant stood at CAD 29 million, including CAD 26 million for the anaerobic facility and CAD 3 million for a new electric boiler installed at the site.

This biogas produced at the anaerobic facility will power the mill's pulp-drying process. Methane biogas production and the new electric boiler are expected to cut the company’s use of oil as fuel by some 90%.
