Terra Posts completes work on 5-MW solar farm on US Virgin Islands

Sep 8, 2014 - US solar sector player Terra Posts PV said on Monday it had finished the mechanical construction on a 5-MW direct current (DC) solar park on the US Virgin Islands.

The Spanish Town solar farm is located on the island of St Croix and is the largest such installation on the US Virgin Islands to date, Terra Posts noted. The plant will be generating enough electricity to satisfy the annual power needs of about 1,500 local households.

A month ago, Canadian Solar Inc (NASDAQ:CSIQ) said it had supplied 4 MW of its polycrystalline solar modules for the Spanish Town Estate facility, which has a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the USVI Water and Power Authority (WAPA). The project was acquired by US utility NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) in July from a unit of Japanese diversified manufacturer Toshiba Corp (TYO:6502).

Terra Posts explained in its statement that due to the islands’ reliance on fossil fuel imports, the popularity of solar power in the territory is consistently increasing. The US Virgin Islands has set a goal to cut the consumption of energy generated from fossil fuels by 60% within the next 10 years.

The company’s portfolio of solar installations nationwide and in the Caribbean, including projects under development, amounts to 300 MW DC.
