Tesvolt, Ocean Batteries form maritime energy storage JV

Tesvolt, Ocean Batteries form maritime energy storage JV The new Kaptein battery module from Tesvolt Ocean

German battery storage systems maker Tesvolt GmbH said on Tuesday that it has merged its maritime solutions division with Norwegian firm Ocean Batteries, establishing a new entity focused on energy storage solutions for ships.

Tesvolt will own 51% of the new firm, called Tesvolt Ocean. The joint venture is based in Luebeck, Germany.

Tesvolt Ocean is offering a novel power storage system, Kaptein, with energy density of 246 Wh per litre, which means it takes up very little space despite its high capacity. As ship spaces are often cramped, the new technology is expected to allow more ships in the maritime and inland shipping sector to be equipped with clean e-drives, Tesvolt said.

The new system also offers favourable weight at just 4.83 kg per kWh of storage capacity compared with available facilities weighing at least 7 kg per kWh, the German company added.
