US consulting and engineering services company Tetra Tech Inc (NASDAQ:TTEK) said Tuesday it has secured a USD-73-million (EUR 68m) single-award contract from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to increase access to affordable and reliable electricity in 18 West African countries.

The project involves creating and implementing national electrification programmes, modernising transmission and distribution utilities, deploying clean energy technologies and catalysing energy investments. Tetra Tech will work with governments, development finance institutions and the private sector under the initiative.

“Tetra Tech has partnered with USAID and the US government to increase access to cleaner, more reliable energy in sub-Saharan Africa for more than 30 years,” commented Tetra Tech chairman and CEO Dan Batrack.

In a separate announcement in June, USAID said that the new USD-73-million Empower West Africa (EWA) Activity under the Power Africa initiative aims to achieve the following goals by 2029: establish 6 million new grid and off-grid direct connections; reach financial close for 2,500 MW of new energy generation capacity; construct 1,500 kilometres of new transmission lines; sell 40,000 productive-use off-grid devices or systems; and reduce, sequester or avoid 14.4 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
