THE FRIDAY NOTE: ACO to build 300 MW of Burma solar parks and the rest of the week's top picks

Aug 29, 2014 - This week US-based ACO Investment agreed to build 300 MW of solar parks in Myanmar, Hareon Solar unveiled several project deals, including a 2.5-GWp solar plan for Turkey, and First Wind got approval for a 206-MW wind project in Maine.

On Thursday it was announced that US alternative investment manager ACO Investment Group has agreed with the government of Myanmar to build two 150-MW solar plants worth a total of USD 480 million (EUR 364m). Once completed in 2016, the parks are to contribute 10%-12% of Myanmar’s total electricity generation.

INDIA NOT TO LEVY ANTI-DUMPING DUTY ON IMPORTED PV CELLS

Moving just a bit to the west we arrive in India, where the government cancelled its plans to impose anti-dumping duties on solar cells from the US, China, Taiwan and Malaysia. According to a PTI report, the proposal has been scrapped by the Finance Ministry as the levies were seen to boost solar equipment costs and have a negative impact on solar power generation.

HAREON SOLAR PLANS PROJECTS IN CHINA, EUROPE, CHILE, US

Throughout the week Chinese firm Hareon Solar Technology Co Ltd (SHA:600401) presented plans and agreements for hundreds of megawatts of solar projects across the globe. The biggest announcement involves 2.5 GWp of photovoltaic (PV) capacity in Turkey, representing an investment of USD 4.5 billion over three years. Also, the company has teamed up with Swiss-based Tritec Power Engineering on 600 MW of solar projects in Switzerland, Germany, the UK, France, Chile, the US and other locations.

At home, Hareon Solar unveiled 600 MWp of distributed solar projects in the provinces of Heilongjiang and Hebei.

FIRST WIND GETS NOD FOR 206-MW WIND FARM IN MAINE

Moving to the wind front, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection on Wednesday granted preliminary approval to First Wind Holdings LLC’s 206-MW Bingham wind project. A final decision on the scheme is to be issued by September 8 at the latest. The 62-turbine park is valued at USD 398 million.

MAINSTREAM SECURES ENVIRO NOD FOR 150-MW CHILEAN WIND FARM

Keeping the pace, Ireland-based Mainstream Renewable Power said Thursday it had obtained an environmental permit for its 150-MW Tchamma wind project in northern Chile. The developer expects to achieve financial close on the project in the July-September quarter of 2015 and initiate construction activities soon after that. The project investment is estimated at about USD 350 million.
