THE FRIDAY NOTE: Siemens bags 400-MW offshore wind job and the rest of the week's top picks

Jan 17, 2014 – In the past week Siemens gets two wind orders for 400-MW Dudgeon offshore farm, NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) gets nod to use solar photovoltaic (PV) technology for its 485-MW Blythe project and a partnership deal fetches Hanwha SolarOne 700 MW of business.

The California Energy Commission has given the green light for the change of the technology upon a five to zero vote. The amended proposal involves the installation of three separate solar plants of 125 MW each and a fourth one of 110 MW.

SCOTLAND GIVES NOD TO 108-MW WIND PLAN BY SSE

We remain on the green light wave with an announcement by the Scottish government from Friday that it had given the thumbs-up to the 108-MW Bhlaraidh wind project in Scotland. The 32-turbine project is being developed by UK utility SSE Plc (LON:SSE) for a total investment of GBP 166.3 million (USD 273.5m/EUR 201m).

SIEMENS TO EQUIP 400-MW DUNGEON OFFSHORE WIND FARM, ALSTOM WINS IN TEXAS

Germany's Siemens (ETR:SIE) won two deals from Statoil ASA (NYSE:STO) to deliver and commission 67 pieces of 6-MW wind turbines for the Norwegian oil producer’s 400-MW Dudgeon offshore wind farm developed jointly with Statkraft AS. The two contracts, unveiled on Tuesday, are worth some GBP 516 million.

On Monday French energy group Alstom (EPA:ALO) said it had won an order to deliver 29 wind turbines to US community-focused renewable energy firm Tri Global Energy LLC for a 80-MW project in Texas. The deal has been signed on December 30 so that the project can qualify for the federal production tax credit (PTC), which expired at the end of 2013.

SHANGHAI HUITAINRAN DEAL BRINGS 700-MW OPPORTUNITY TO HANWHA SOLARONE

On the solar front, China-based Hanwha SolarOne Co Ltd (NASDAQ:HSOL) and Shanghai HuiTianRan Investment Holding Group are to form a solar project partnership which could fetch Hanwha 700 MW of orders. More specifically, Shanghai HuiTianRan plans to order photovoltaic (PV) modules made by Hanwha SolarOne for its 700 MW of solar projects or name the company engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) service supplier for these same projects. The two companies have already signed a memorandum of understanding and intend to ink a definitive strategic cooperation agreement in 60 days, Hanwha SolarOne said in a statement on Wednesday.

JINKOSOLAR TO SEPARATE SOLAR POWER PLANTS DIVISION

Chinese solar module maker JinkoSolar Holding Co Ltd (NYSE:JKS) wants to separate its downstream solar power plant division in order to ensure the sustainable growth of that business. In a statement on Monday the company said its board of directors had given the green light to its plan to explore different options such as an initial public offering (IPO), pre-IPO financing or a merger and acquisition deal.

GOOGLE POURS USD 75m IN 182-MW PATTERN WIND PROJECT

US-based Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) said Tuesday it had concluded a deal to invest USD 75 million in the 182-MW Panhandle 2 wind farm, which Pattern Energy (NASDAQ:PEGI) is building it Texas. The Panhandle 2 is the second phase of a 400-MW complex. It is the 15th renewable energy project that Google’s invests in and its second one in Texas.
