Gas transmission system operator Thyssengas GmbH and municipal utility Stadtwerke Emmerich are partnering to repurpose an existing gas pipeline to supply hydrogen to the Lower Rhine region in western Germany.

The conversion of the gas pipeline between the cities of Emmerich and Bocholt in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia will enable hydrogen supply for local industrial and medium-sized companies as well as municipal heating.

The Lower Rhine region between Emmerich, Bocholt, Xanten, Wesel, Voerde and Duisburg is one of the clusters where Thyssengas has identified strong demand for hydrogen as numerous energy-intensive companies will need hydrogen to advance their decarbonisation.

In the past few weeks, Thyssengas, Stadtwerke Emmerich, regional utility BEW and other companies have discussed the plan for the hydrogen pipeline between Emmerich and Bocholt.

In addition to the pipeline project, Thyssengas is planning to establish connections for the Lower Rhine cluster to the Zevenaar border crossing point where hydrogen will be imported from the Netherlands, as well as to the hydrogen cluster of the GET H2 initiative and the hydrogen storage facility in Xanten, North Rhine-Westphalia.

The company is also working on integrating the planned electrolysers and hydrogen-ready gas power plants in the Rheinberg, Voerde and Duisburg triangle into the planned hydrogen network. A connection is also planned to the hydrogen north-south corridor that will connect Germany's North Sea coast with the centres of demand in North Rhine-Westphalia by 2028.
