Indian firm Gujarat Borosil Ltd this week inaugurated a production facility in Bharuch for 2-mm tempered glass suitable for glass-to-glass solar modules, the Economic Times reported.

The company, a unit of Borosil Glass Works Ltd (BOM:502219), says the technology allows it to make lighter glass that also absorbs less solar energy and thus helps boost the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) products. That glass contains less iron oxide and is free of toxic materials like antimony.

Borosil's manufacturing facility in Bharuch, Gujarat can produce 13,000 sq m of glass per day, based on the standard thickness of 3.2 mm, which would be enough to help generate almost 600 MW of solar power, the company says on its website. The new upgrade for thinner glass expands it capabilities further.
