Wind power in Brazil is helping the social and economic development of the country, said Friday the president of state-owned energy research firm EPE, Mauricio Tolmasquim.

Currently, the areas with the largest potential for expanding Brazil's wind sector are located in the poorest regions, but the arrival of wind farms ensures additional income to the locations due to the land lease for tower installations. This is one of the main ways wind energy contributes to the economic development of the whole region, noted the government.

The government has forecast wind energy to become the second largest source of Brazilian electricity in a few years. At the moment, the country has about 7.8 GW of wind generation.
