Iran intends to lift its installed wind and solar power capacity to 1,000 MW in 2019 from 400 MW now, the Islamic Republic News Agency reports.

Citing Homayoun Haeri, deputy minister of energy for electricity and energy affairs, the news agency wrote on Tuesday that the plan will be implemented through new capacity additions and fresh private sector investment. It is in line with the country’s efforts to cut its dependence on fossil fuels and diversify its energy mix.

The Iranian government is seeking to install 5,000 MW of new renewable energy capacity by 2020 and an additional 2,500 MW by 2030.

In September 2017, London-based Quercus Investment Partners Ltd unveiled plans to invest in a 600-MW solar project in Iran that will be one of the largest in the world when completed.
