Renewable power generation in Portugal, excluding large hydro, surged to 120.1 GWh on January 2 from 40.0 GWh in the previous day, thanks to a 390.1% jump in wind power.

According to data by power utility Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), the country's wind power output for the day reached 96.7 GWh. It peaked at 4,532.0 MW, which is above the last peak generation record of 4,454 MW from November 21.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) generation declined to 0.4 GWh from previous day's 1.3 GWh.

Portugal's wind power generation represents around 25% of national consumption. In the first nine months of 2016, renewables supplied 61% of demand, mostly due to above average production at hydropower plants (HPPs) and wind farms, REN said in November.
