to-the-point: S African solar car to travel to Namibia, Botswana

The Ilanga 2 solar-powered electric car, designed by students at the University of Johannesburg, has started a 4,000-km (2,485-mile) journey to Namibia and Botswana, SABC News said Friday.

The automobile travels at 49 km/h, according to the report. After hitting the road in Gauteng province’s capital, it is expected to make its first stop in Northern Cape, after which it will go outside South Africa for the first time.

The solar car will compete in the International World Solar competition in Australia later in 2015, mechanical engineering science lecturer, Nickey Jansen van Rensburg, was cited as saying.
