Tokelau islands to source all power from renewables by Sep 2012

Dec 12, 2011 - The atolls of Tokelau in the South Pacific expect to cover 100% of their power consumption from renewable energy sources by September 2012, BBC News said, citing former government leader Foua Toloa.

According to the local population, which is around 1,500 people, the major reason behind the ambitious target is climate change. In addition, transporting small amounts of fossil fuels in the middle of the ocean also bolsters significantly the energy expenses of Tokelauans, according to the report.

The islands, administered by New Zealand, plan to source 93% of their power from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and 7% from biodiesel, locally produced from coconut oil.
