Danish carbon emission reduction technologies specialist Topsoe and South Africa-based chemicals and energy company Sasol (JSE:SOL) today announced the launch of their joint venture focused on the development and delivery of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The launch of the new business, called Zaffra and based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, follows the signing last year of a memorandum of understanding and subsequently of an agreement between Topsoe and Sasol about the creation of the 50/50 joint venture.

Zaffra will leverage Sasol’s asset development, plant construction, and operating and technology expertise along with Topsoe’s carbon emission reduction technologies.

“The growing demand for SAF will require multiple pathways and Zaffra is in a unique position to become a relevant player in this market,” stated Zaffra chief executive Jan Toschka.

Via the joint venture Topsoe is for the first time moving from being a technology provider to a SAF producer.

According to a previous announcement, the partnership will aim to build and operate SAF plants and and market SAF derived mainly from non-fossil feedstock, using green hydrogen, sustainable sources of CO2 and/or biomass with a focus on Sasol’s Fischer Tropsch and Topsoe’s related technologies.
