Toshiba Corp (OTCMKTS:TOSYY) has agreed a strategic partnership and manufacturing technology license with Belgium-based NV Bekaert SA (EBR:BEKB) regarding membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), a key component for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers.

The deal, made through the subsidiary Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions Corporation, will combine Bekaert's knowhow in porous transport layers (PTL), an important part of the membrane electrode assemblies for water electrolysers, with Toshiba's innovative iridium-saving technology for these parts.

Specifically, Bekaert will undertake commercialisation of MEA production, while Toshiba will license its iridium-saving MEA technology, allowing Bekaert to manufacture and distribute the equipment.

The agreement covers all markets except Japan-related projects, which are subject to a separate deal, Toshiba noted.
