Toshiba ESS, KenGen sign MoU on geothermal power cooperation

Japan’s Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS) and Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC, also known as KenGen, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in the geothermal power sector in developing countries including those in East Africa.

The parties said in an announcement on Wednesday that the document outlines their partnership on operation and maintenance (O&M) services for the geothermal power plants. The arrangement will also see KenGen contribute to the development of geothermal power project in East African countries.

“There is an ongoing survey to identify geothermal resources in the Great Rift Valley, a tectonic plate boundary running from north to south with immense geothermal potential. Both companies are delighted to cooperate in this opportunity, and plan further business expansion,” the press release reads.

Both KenGen and Toshiba ESS have the industry know-how and networks in the geothermal power sector, which they intend to the bring to the partnership.

The Kenyan power producer has 799 MW of geothermal capacity installed. Toshiba ESS had a hand in the development of multiple geothermal projects, having delivered 60 geothermal power generation sets with a total capacity of around 3,790 MW across the world, including Uganda, Malawi and other East African countires. Its steam turbines and generators are also installed in KenGen’s plants.

“Geothermal energy provides sustainable power supply. It is a resource we have in abundance in Kenya, an advantage that has enabled us to build a considerable wealth of expertise in its exploration and development. This we have done for more than 50 years,” commented Rebecca Miano, KenGen managing director and CEO.
