Toshiba Corp and Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to combine their respective technology and knowledge to pursue Virtual Power Plant (VPP) opportunities in Taiwan.

Under the deal, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corp (Toshiba ESS) and Taiwan-based Toshiba Electronic Components Taiwan Corp will work with ITRI to "validate and demonstrate" that market trading operations and resource management strategies can bolster the stability of the country's power infrastructure, a press statement says.

The Japanese group said it will contribute its expertise in resource aggregation technologies, including predictive analytics for power generation, renewable energy, and battery storage. ITRI, in turn, will share its knowledge of the country's energy market framework and its technologies for the Demand Response system and battery energy storage system (BESS) integration.

Taiwan aims for renewables to account for 27%-30% of its energy mix by 2030, Toshiba noted.
