Japanese conglomerate Toshiba Corp (TYO:6502) said Tuesday it will work on some 50 MW of geothermal energy projects in Djibouti with the Office Djiboutien de Developpement de l'Energie Geothermique (ODDEG).

Under the terms of a newly-signed memorandum of understanding (MoU), Toshiba will support the government organisation, established in 2014 to be in charge of the long-term development of Djibouti's geothermal resources, in the areas of guidelines formulation for power plant operation and management, development and supply of geothermal generation systems, and personnel training.

At present, Djibouti’s installed generation capacity amounts to 120 MW, most of which comes from thermal power plants and is supplemented with power imports from Ethiopia. The current plans under the MoU with Toshiba envisage building geothermal power stations with a base capacity of about 50 MW, advancing the African country's plans to promote renewables as the basis for a sustainable green economy.

Toshiba says it has a 23% share of the global geothermal market. In Africa, the company recently delivered four units to Kenya and struck a comprehensive collaboration deal in Tanzania.
