Paris-based renewables independent power producer (IPP) Total Eren is moving ahead with its first project in Honduras, a 112-MW wind farm, which will be built in San Marcos de Colon in the Choluteca Department.

The developer said today it has agreed on new terms and conditions of the 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) signed between the Honduran national electricity company, Empresa Nacional de Energia Electrica (ENEE) and the project company called San Marcos Wind Energy. Total Eren said it inked a purchase contract for 100% of San Marcos Wind Energy in March last year.

Under the deal, the project company will also be responsible for grid reinforcements. It will construct 95 km of transmission lines, a new 230-kV substation and upgrade two existing substations.

The San Marcos wind project is expected to generate about 500 GWh a year, enough to serve about 460,000 local people, according to the announcement.

Total Eren said its entry into Honduras with this project represents one of the largest foreign investments in a renewable energy project in Central America.

“We are excited to begin construction of the project and look forward to pursuing leveraging Total Eren’s expertise as we continue to grow in the Central American market,” said Fabienne Demol, executive vice president and global head of business development of Total Eren.

The French company’s presence in Latin America includes also 300 MW of solar and wind assets in operation in Brazil, 190 MWp of capacity in operation in Chile, 180 MW of solar and wind parks in operation in Argentina and 120 MWp under construction in the Dominican Republic.
