French energy major TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) and compatriot industrial gases company Air Liquide (EPA:AI) will form a joint venture to roll out more than 100 hydrogen stations targetting heavy-duty vehicles in Europe in the coming years.

The hydrogen refueling solutions will be located on major European roads in France, the Benelux and in Germany. It will operate under the TotalEnergies brand.

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide plan to form their equally-owned joint venture this year, subject to the finalisation of contractual documentation and to the securing of necessary regulatory approvals. To be jointly managed by the companies, the joint venture will invest, build and operate the hydrogen stations.

The partnership combines TotalEnergies’ expertise in the operation of station networks and the distribution of energies to business-to-business customers with Air Liquide’s expertise in technologies and the hydrogen value chain.

"Following the recent signature of a partnership for the production of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen on our Grandpuits Zero Crude Platform, we are pleased to once again join forces with Air Liquide and continue our common efforts to decarbonise mobility,” said Thierry Pflimlin, president Marketing and Services at TotalEnergies.

Air Liquide Group vice president Matthieu Giard commented that to promote the widespread use of hydrogen for heavy-duty mobility, “it is imperative to accelerate the development of refueling infrastructures and to offer vehicle manufacturers and transport operators a sufficiently dense network of stations.”
