French energy major TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) has launched its project for the construction of a 1-GW solar park in southern Iraq, the director-general of Basra Oil Company (BOC) said over the weekend.

The project is part of four contracts that TotalEnergies signed with the Iraqi Ministry of Oil for gas, oil, renewable energy and seawater desalination facilities in Basra governorate.

During an interview with Iraq's official newspaper Al-Sabah, BOC's director-general Bassim Abdul Karim said that TotalEnergies initiated its four contracts on August 16 in a move that underlines the dedication of both the Ministry of Oil and TotalEnergies to executing the investment agreements that had been already concluded.

The Iraqi government gave the green light to the gigawatt-scale solar project last spring. The photovoltaic park will be built in the Artawi oil field in Basra.

Along with the solar project, the French power company is launching projects to build a seawater treatment plant, develop almost 600 million cubic metres of gas fields and develop the Artawi oilfield.
