TotalEnergies inks PPA for 1-GW wind project in Kazakhstan

France's TotalEnergies (EPA:TTE) said Friday it has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for its 1-GW Mirny onshore wind project in Kazakhstan, which will also include a 600-MWh battery for more reliable supply.

The USD-1.4-billion (EUR 1.3bn) project will sell all of its electricity to the Financial Settlement Centre of Renewable Energy (FSC), a government-owned entity, for injection into the grid.

The 25-year PPA was inked in Astana between TotalEnergies affiliate Total Eren and the FSC. As previously announced, TotalEnergies is developing the Mirny project together with the Kazakhstani wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna and national company KazMunayGas, which will each hold 20%.

The 200-turbine wind project is of unprecedented scale for Kazakhstan and will contribute to the country’s target of 15% of electricity from renewables by 2030.

TotalEnergies stated that, after Iraq, this is another example of its ability to leverage its position in the upstream sector to speed up renewables development in oil and gas countries.
