French energy company TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) has joined a green energy demonstration project that is already powering subsea equipment off the coast of Orkney, Scotland in a move to support its decarbonisation activities.

The GBP-2-million (USD 2.5m/EUR 2.3m) Renewables for Subsea Power (RSP) project combines a wave energy converter provided by Mocean Energy with a Halo underwater battery storage system by Verlume. It is aimed at demonstrating the use of green technologies for the provision of reliable low-carbon power and communications to subsea equipment. The initiative also involves Baker Hughes, Serica Energy, Harbour Energy, Transmark Subsea, PTTEP and the Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC).

“Our participation in RSP demonstrates how important it is to us to pursue new ideas and technology that will support the decarbonisation of our oil and gas production business, both here in the UK and across the world,” said TotalEnergies technology, data and innovation manager Dave MacKinnon.

“TotalEnergies has a long history in Scotland and an incredible track record in offshore operations, and their experience will be extremely valuable as we begin to commercialise our Blue Star product line,” commented Mocean Energy commercial director Ian Crossland.
