TotalEnergies, Nobel Energy to add 900 MW renewables in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's Ministry of Energy has signed memoranda of understanding (MoU) with France’s TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) and Nobel Energy Management for the development of 900 MW of wind and solar projects.

The capacity will be installed in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, a landlocked exclave on the border with Armenia, and the East Zangezur Economic Region. Around 650 MW of the proposed plants will be sited in Nakhchivan, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov announced last week.

Specifically, the pact with TotalEnergies will assess the options for building a 250-MW solar park and a wind farm of the same size in Nakhchivan and East Zangezur. Under the arrangement, opportunities for deploying energy storage capacity will be explored, as well.

Meanwhile, Nobel Energy will work on a 400-MW solar project in Nakhchivan, which will have the potential to export electricity to Turkey.

Planning to transform Nakhchivan into a green energy zone, Azerbaijan will seek to add 1.5 GW of wind and solar power capacity in the autonomous republic and export electricity to Turkey and Europe from at least 1 GW.

The two pacts come along with another MoU with civil engineering company China Gezhouba Group for the implementation of 2 GW of renewable energy projects in Azerbaijan. Apart from wind, solar and storage, the MoU also provides for collaboration on the assessment of green hydrogen projects.
