TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) said Thursday it is launching a tender to procure 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for use in its European refineries.

The move is in line with the French energy group’s goal to decarbonise the entire hydrogen consumption in its European refineries by 2030. TotalEnergies has six refineries in Europe -- in Antwerp, Belgium, in Leuna, Germany, in Zeeland, the Netherlands, as well as three French sites in Normandy, Donges and Feyzin, along with two biorefineries in France -- in La Mede and Grandpuits.

The company is seeking to replace 500,000 tonnes per year of the hydrogen used in these refineries with green hydrogen by 2030.

“Alongside other green and low carbon hydrogen production projects that the Company is already undertaking at La Mede, Grandpuits, Leuna and Normandy, we are now approaching third-party providers to supply us with green hydrogen to accelerate the decarbonization of our operations,” said TotalEnergies chairman and chief executive Patrick Pouyanne. He believes the company will be able to secure the most competitive solutions by offering various global suppliers the opportunity for medium- and long-term contracts.

TotalEnergies separately unveiled today a green and low-carbon hydrogen supply agreement with Air Liquide to decarbonise the TotalEnergies refining and petrochemical platform in Normandy.
