Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corp (TYO:7203) on Wednesday unveiled a USD-49-million (EUR 44.9m) plan to build a 30-MW solar power facility at its engine plant in Huntsville, North Alabama.

In a statement on Wednesday, the group said that Toyota Alabama and Toyota Tsusho America Inc (TAI) have entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) for this project with Huntsville Utilities.

Construction work is set to start this spring while commissioning is scheduled for the summer of 2024. TAI’s Energy Infrastructure Solutions team was in charge of the project’s development and will now manage the construction process. Post-completion, it will own and operate the facility.

The 168-acre solar plant is designed to produce 62 MWh annually, reducing about 22,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year. Upon completion more than 70% of the electricity used at the Alabama engine plant will come from the sun, the press release says.
