Trina Storage, part of Chinese group Trina Solar Co Ltd (SHA:688599), said that it has commissioned a 9.3-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Avetrana, Italy, completing its first utility-scale project of this kind in the country.

The BESS, known as Torre di Pierri and located on the heel of Italy’s boot, is a standalone system built for Trinasolar International System Business Unit (ISBU), a Trina Solar group company that serves as its global project development arm.

Trinasolar ISBU developed the project, and it is also the asset owner and operator. The company selected Trina Storage to supply the battery.

Trinasolar ISBU has a contract with Italian transmission grid operator Terna to deliver its services for up to 1,000 annual operation hours as a fast reserve, contributing to grid stability.

The contract was a result of Terna's "Fast Reserve" tender, a grid balancing service in Italy that improves the stability of grid frequency while leaving asset owners margins for arbitrage. Trina Storage's system underwent rigorous testing by Terna and distribution network operator E-Distribuzione before going live, the storage solutions provider said.

Trinasolar ISBU will use extra capacity to reduce the price differences in the electricity market.
