The Tunisian government has given the green light to several solar projects with a combined output of 500 MW and a total investment of TND 1.2 billion (USD 407.9m/EUR 374.9m).

The projects were awarded as part of the country's concession system in 2019 to Norwegian renewable power producer Scatec ASA (OSL:SCATC), a consortium of France's Engie (EPA:ENGI) and Moroccan energy company Nareva, as well as a consortium of AMEA Power LLC and TBEA Xinjiang New Energy Co Ltd.

The new solar plants will be located in the governorates of Kairouan (100 MW), Tataouine (200 MW), Tozeur (50 MW), Sidi Bouzid (50 MW) and Gafsa (100 MW), the government said last week on its website. The new projects will help Tunisia reduce its natural gas imports by 6% and cut costs by TND 130 million.

The North African country needs to add about 3.8 GW of green power capacity as it seeks to boost the share of renewables to 30% by 2030.
